Also the company buys when it thinks the price is too low... by just playing supply and demand games they can help move the stick higher. IBM does it frequently when it's trading too low. Besides, the rationale is that it moderates the effect of dilution from the DEC sale. THAT is also a very stabilizing thing to do.
