I would like to see more education involve thinking on the part of kids. For example, one of my kids was learning about the branches of government. It seems that such a topic would be perfect for a role-playing lesson. Divide the class into a Supreme Court and a Legislature. The teacher could be the executive. Draft a simiple constitution and some laws. Let the kids see where the powers and limits of each branch are. It would take more time, but the kids would have a deeper understanding that would stick with them for life. With the current approach, kids just have to "re-memorize" the same facts every couple of years, since memorization seems to be a very unreliable means of retaining information.
