In a way yes and a way no. I'd say they should know how to find the capitols and some of the major cities across the US and how they are connected.

My wife went to college when she was 40 and got a degree in programming. Hell, she was the Valedictorian. Hand her the car keys and a map and she can't find next door. OTOH I can set the VCR and that's the end of my programming but I rarely get lost and can see the relationships of countries and where they are to me and each other.
