Seriously, if it's reasonably possible that the industry might be susceptible to changing the defacto standard, that situation is a symptom of a weak value chain that isn't strong enough to support the standard.

The industry has the opportunity to turn on a dime if they see a more viable alternative. The defacto standard which will dethrone CF may come out of a field of research competitive with flash memory. Flash memory products, or any product for that matter, which fit into a CF slot are also threatening. That is, as long as they don't incorporate SanDisk intellectual property.

Recall that SNDK has already defeated the big behemouth known as Intel (who subsequently shelved its flash memory product; The Miniature Card) and has distinct advantages over Toshiba's offering (SmartMedia).

Also, don't underestimate the power of the consumer.
