Tele2 announces UMTS launch in Luxembourg

May 01, 2003 1:14 PM EST

STOCKHOLM, Sweden—Tele2 said its subsidiary in Luxembourg has launched its third-generation Universal Mobile Telecommunications System network. Tele2 described the launch as a “soft launch,” adding that the major push will come in the third quarter.

The Tango 3G network covers 90 percent of the population and 70 percent of the territory in Luxembourg. The operator did not provide 3G handset or pricing information for the service.

“The launch of 3G in Luxembourg is important for the Tele2 Group as not only is it one of the first launches in Europe, but it will also act as a test market for our other 3G operations,” said Lars-Johan Jarnheimer, chief executive officer of Tele2.

In addition to Luxembourg, Tele2 holds UMTS licenses in Finland, Sweden and Liechtenstein. It returned its Norwegian UMTS license at the end of 2002 due to the high cost of rollout and has current-generation mobile services in Russia.
