Systems on a chip have been formulating for a long time, but something has always held them back. Mostly, I guess it's been just too hard to deal with yields when you make the thing too complicated. Still, you can bet that Intel has also got a system on a chip in development and for whatever reason, they've not brought it out.

One of the wonderful things about the PC is that the pieces evolve independently at their own pace. The difficulty of the "single chip" PC is that if any one part doesn't meet the market requirements, the whole effort fails. In particular, the National chip is unlikely to offer competitive 3D graphics performance.

I don't think Intel intends to develop a "single chip" PC, although the number of chips will continue to go down.
