It is very true that Vietnam was a serious mistake by Johnson. Also by Kennedy, and Eisenhower, who had set the policy in motion. We have John Foster Dulles and Allen Dulles to thank for that. Foreign policy was not Johnson's forte.
But domestically he did a great deal of good for the country. The Civil Rights Act brought millions of Americans closer to full citizenship. And Medicare was a huge step forward for America. Just ask any elderly person who is not wealthy.
I have no love for Johnson. I lost three very good friends in Vietnam, largely because of his foreign policy, and saw others driven insane by combat, commit suicide, handicapped for life as a result of that war. Nixon was president when I was in the service, incidentally.
But I cannot ignore that domestically, LBJ did a great deal of good.
