Which is the better parallel for Obama? So far the Kennedy parallels have seemed the most fitting; Tuesday's voting will help determine whether that remains the case.

It's only true if you compare the Kennedy mystique to Obamamania. But in terms of personal qualifications, it's quite different. Obama has to prove that he's not a wimp. Since he has started off a cool, remote figure out of an ur-liberal academic background, that's a tough challenge for him. Rev. Wright has NOT helped.

But Bobby Kennedy had the reputation of an attack dog when he started his campaign. He had worked for Joe McCarthy (people forget this today), launched an anti-Mafia campaign as Attorney General, and woe unto you if he thought you were an enemy of the Kennedys. Bobby came late to the idealism of the 1968 campaign, which is why he probably could have sold it to the public, who would have trusted that he hadn't gone soft-headed just because he had become soft-hearted.

For Obama, it's the opposite. He clearly wanted to be wafted into the White House on the wings of acclaim for his brilliant rhetoric. He has never had a tough campaign except maybe his first losing congressional campaign. His opponent basically imploded during his Senate campaign. He has lived his whole life in super-liberal places, which is why the "bitter" comments stuck to him so hard. It's what people think in San Francisco and Hyde Park.

Obama has to prove he's tough enough for the real world.
