Wholesale market open for audio, video items

GUANGZHOU -- The first national wholesale market of audio and video products is now
open.

Guangdong Audio and Video Emporium (GDAVE), under Ministry of Culture supervision, is
the first of four planned markets.

The other three will open in Beijing, Shanghai and Wuhan.

Li Lanfang, Guangdong vice-governor, said GDAVE was created as a result of the province's
success in eradicating illegally copied, and pornographic, audio and visual products.

During the past few years, the province has broken 45 illegal disk production lines and closed
six disk factories implicated in illegal activities.

Guangdong also banned more than 30 illegal audio and visual product distribution centers --
including Panyu Yifa Electric Appliance Market and Zoumagang Publication Market in
Guangzhou and Chaoyang Xiashan Audio and Visual Emporium in eastern Guangdong.

Provincial officials confiscated more than 6 million illegally copied audio and visual products --
including 354,500 disks seized recently in Jiangmen, Zhongshan and Shanwei.

Meng Xiaoju, vice-minister of culture, said, during opening ceremonies, the market's
operation, with the other three centres, will consolidate China's achievements in battling
production of pornographic and illegally copied audio and video items.

Establishment of the centres will also help protect intellectual property rights.

In addition, the markets' operations will assist officials in further campaigns against such illegal
activities, Meng added.

Guangdong Audio and Video Emporium ity will be the general distribution centre of audio and
video products in the province. Other wholesale activities will be strictly forbidden.
