Thanks for the more hopeful take on things than I could cook up. I did think later about the previous IBM KM-like announcement later.
To respond to an earlier post no one responded to about the implications for AXC with the advent, eventually, of digital TV, I refer you back to an extensive series of posts I did some months ago after a call to AXC IR re: that very issue. For more info, look back a few hundred posts. The sum is that it won't profit AXC very much, since they have no patents on the TRANSMISSION of HDTV, and since the FCC rulings are only licenses, not rulings on product specs, its unclear if new products will transgress AXC patents. However, IR did say they have much greater hope this'll spur even greater demand for DST storage units, as opposed to what I thought would be much greater demand for their DCT digital video offerings. They're keeping an eye on it. Actually, there's a real turf war going on now between broadcasters and their detractors. Broadcasters are complaining hi and low about the huge cost of new equipment, thus they'll delay introducing it as long as they can, but other critics are just saying its thinly disguised self interest. They want to hold this free spectrum (which angers everyone else in the spectrum using industries) for future fee services, making more of a profit. Whatever, its a real dog fight out there, at least verbally and intellectually for now. I think the gov't has finally mandated some introductions on a rolling timetable basis to force them to get HDTV rolling. Whatever, it looks like the direct sales or licensing impact to AXC is likely to be small or nonexistent, based upon what they told me. Of course, they'll be watching new products very closely to see if any infringe, and will pursue the money if its there.
BTW, I've got another whole list of ? into IR and should finally connect this week, trying to divine the impact of AXC's win over Mitsu, and the likely impact that would come from a win from the currently running (finally!) lawsuit. Will post ASAP after the call.
Just a reminder that Gus is on vacation for some time far away from internet access. Anyone else out there doing excite searches? |
