StarBurst Named First Independent Software Vendor Corporate Partner in Internet2 Project to Develop IP Multicast-enabled Network Technologies
StarBurst is Donating more than $1 Million of its Reliable Multicast Software to Help Leading Academic Institutions Advance Internet Networking and Applications
Concord, MA, November 3, 1997-StarBurst Communications today became the first independent software vendor corporate partner in the Internet2 project. The company is donating more than $1 million of its reliable multicast software to help Internet2 develop advanced, IP multicast-enabled network technologies that will accelerate the development of next generation, Internet-based information distribution applications.
StarBurst will collaborate with other Internet2 members - which include more than 100 U.S. research universities, non-profit affiliations, government agencies and high-tech companies - to develop multicast-enabled, leading-edge applications, in areas such as telemedicine, interactive distance learning, and online collaborative research. Internet2 members will develop and deploy these new applications and network technologies over the next three years.
"We welcome StarBurst as an Internet2 corporate partner. As innovators in multicast technology, StarBurst's contribution greatly supports Internet2's multicast efforts," said Douglas E. Van Houweling, CEO of the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID). UCAID provides a formal organization that supports Internet2 members as they develop the broadband applications, engineering and network management tools for next generation Internet use in research and education.
StarBurst Multicast is the first reliable multicast file transfer application for efficiently distributing information to thousands of receivers simultaneously over local and wide area networks. StarBurst Multicast's reliability and speed stem from its true server-push technology, which enables a server to send a single stream of traffic to any number of clients by replicating information in the network rather than at the server. This reduces server and network congestion.
"IP multicast is emerging as a mission-critical way of relieving Internet congestion and enhancing information delivery. We are pleased to offer our reliable IP multicasting technology to educational institutions, and work with them to create a new, high-speed generation of Internet applications," said C. Kenneth Miller, StarBurst Chairman of the Board and Chief Technical Officer. "The Internet2 initiative gives us an exciting chance to combine our corporate expertise with leading universities' research knowledge."
About Internet2
Announced in October 1996, Internet2 has grown from 34 U.S. research universities to more than 100. Internet2 is developing advanced network applications that will be better served by gigaPoPs capable of providing scalable high-speed connection points for universities. Internet2 participants also plan to broaden their research and development expenditures to help create these gigaPoPs. Member universities, working with private member companies and non-profit organizations, are developing tools for scientific research and higher education in the 21st century. The Internet2 homepage is located at internet2.edu.
About StarBurst Multicast
StarBurst Multicast is the first highly scalable IP multicast file transfer solution that guarantees 100-percent reliable, one-to-many data delivery in a highly efficient manner. While current point-to-point file transfer methods use a bandwidth-consuming approach to delivering information, StarBurst Multicast, based on StarBurst's multicast file transfer protocol MFTP), enables servers to push data over the network simultaneously to all recipients, using bandwidth much more efficiently and significantly reducing the load on the sending servers.
StarBurst Multicast is a multi-platform, cross-platform, client/server application available on the following platforms: Sun Solaris, SunOS, HP-UX, IBM AIX, Digital UNIX, SGI IRIX, Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows, DOS, OS/2, VAX VMS, SCO OpenServer, and SCO UnixWare.
