If caucuses were the norm for Republicans in most states (as in IA and your state - I'm assuming what you described for your state would be called a caucus - it does sound like a very weird procedure) then your case would sound a little more believable for me. But most states have primary elections.

McCain won the primary elections in NH, SC, and FL. Then on Super Tuesday, he won the primary elections in AZ, CA, CT, DE, IL, MO, NJ, NY, and OK. I see no reason to think McCain didn't honestly win these elections. By that time, most of the other candidates had pulled out and he was the nominee apparent. Things were complicated this year by the crowded field of Republican candidates.
