Santa Anita Derby Results

The Deputy ran as I expected and won the Santa Anita Derby over War Chant.

I believe both Anees and Captain Steve did little to damage their reputations and both deserve a shot at the Derby along with the top two finishers.

The pace of the race came up slower than I expected. I thought that Surside, War Chant, and Cocky would make for an honest pace. I don't think that was the case. Both the fractions and my visual observation suggest that they were going slow up front early. I think that severely compromised the chances of Anees who for some strange reason was totally disconnected from the field. I know he's a closer, but he had no shot from there. As it was he made a huge move to get into contention and then flattened out. Under the circumstances I think that was the best that could be expected. If that's the way he's going to run though, he's gong to need a hot pace and Moses to part the sea to get the job done in Louisville.

I think Captain Steve also ran very well. You simply can't spot two horses that are at least as good as you (if not better) several lengths into a slow pace and expect to pick them up. It would have been a superior performce had he won.
I think the top four horses are closer in ability than the margins suggest and could easily flip spots in the Derby under a different pace scenario. The only thing I can say for certain is that The Deputy ran better than War Chant because he stalked outside and behind and was able to pick him up and start drawing away. War Chant ran well though and can improve.
