Dan3, <<<in this increasingly cost conscious market, the price advantage of a dual Athlon system compared to a quad Xeon system must be enormous. If there's any truth to this story, it puts AMD in the enterprise server space, right off the bat. It may also cap Intel's progress into the enterprise space. >>>

I don't think any of you engineers understand what is going on. The fight is not between Intel and AMD. The fight is to capture the heart and soul of information technology. The fight is to make RISC systems the next MAC. The fight is to place IBM series 390 computers into a prominent place in a science museum.

Intel has to be like the IBM of the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. AMD has no chance of doing this by themselves. They don't have the R&D money, resources, and marketing potential.

AMD has to ride Intel's coattails and become Avis to Intel's Hertz. If they to go head to head with Intel, as the ego of a Jerry Sanders may be prone to do, that would be a very risky strategy. He would have to bet the copmpany. His chances of success in going head to head with Intel is very small - even if he came up with significantly better products across the board. Right now AMD is nothing but a Me Too Company .

If Intel had management that was really up to it, they can convert this economic freefall into a major opportunity. IA can significantly cut hardware costs for companies using information technology to be globally competitive.
