Global DVD-Audio Standards To Be Concluded By Spring

TOKYO (Nikkei)-International standards governing DVD-Audio should be decided as early as spring, industry sources said Thursday. The DVD-Audio working group presented last month a provisional draft on standards to the International Steering Committee, consisting of representatives of the global recording industry. A final draft is slated to be competed by the end of December.

DVD-Audio has a data storage capacity seven times greater than CDs. They are able to record and play multi-channels, with sound quality close to the original. Software and players designed for DVD-Audio will be manufactured by the end of 1998 at the earliest.

Provisional standards, technically close to the finished product, will be able to record not only music, but also characters, and still and moving pictures.

The working group has 10 members, including Victor Co. of Japan, Ltd., Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.

Standards for DVD-Audio are not expected to be as controversial as those for DVD-RAM. Sony and Philips Electronics NV of the Netherlands proposed standards for DVD-RAM, which were not accepted.
