Some factoids from "Capitalism - A very short introduction" :

Transnational corporations - 7000 in 1973, 26,000 in 1993

In 2000, the whole of Africa received less than 1% of foreign direct investment, similar to Finland, a country of 5 million.

Asian financial crisis:
1994-7, 655 billion invested in emerging markets
1998-2001 19 billion invested in emerging markets
Demonstrating the blessings and curses of mobile capital!

The book points out that there are currently no credible alternatives to capitalism. Any change is likely to occur within capitalism, as the two main alternatives, socialism and communism, are both on the wane and seemingly toast. It points out that if you want to change the world, you'd better work from within or get run over.
