Such diplomatic explorations have been going on all the time in their proper fashion, at ambassadorial levels. Yes, even under Bush. If you have sense, you do not waste the prestige and political capital of the President of the United States on a major diplomatic summit unless the groundwork has been laid and you KNOW you can accomplish something.

Obama, like all the Democrats, is confusing lack of results with lack of efforts, for obvious partisan reasons. (There were no results under Clinton either but that, they understood.) There are no results because Iran is a rogue state that intends to achieve its national interests through ever-greater use of terrorist proxies such as Hizbullah, Hamas, and JAM, and nuclear weapons. So far nobody has shown them any reason why this is not a good idea.

Mere diplomacy without some very big stick is never going to change their minds. Obambi intends to talk nicely to Ahmedinijad without carrying so much as a twig.
