NEWS/ DVD Player Sales Promotion Falls Short Of Target

Nikkei English News via Individual Inc. : (Nikkei Industrial Daily, Nov. 10, 1997)

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Sales of digital videodisc (DVD) players remain weak even with a joint promotion campaign by the 68 member firms of the Nippon Electric Big-Stores Association that began on Oct. 1 and is to last until the end of the year. By Oct. 31, the campaign achieved only 16.8% of its three-month sales target of 30,000 units, the industry body reports.

One reason for the poor results was delayed production of new models by some manufacturers, association officials note. Meanwhile, the number of DVD software titles, including movies and animated features, is expected to reach 650 within the year from 450 now. Ahead of the winter bonus season, the consumer electronics retailers plan to enhance sales efforts through their 3,500 stores nationwide.
