More good news for MSFT:

Hitachi to launch PCs with new Microsoft software

TOKYO, June 29 (Reuters) - Japan's Hitachi Ltd said on Tuesday it would release new versions of its personal computer models preinstalled with new software from Microsoft Corp (Nasdaq:MSFT - news).

The company will release in July new versions of its ''Flora'' laptop and desktop personal computers preinstalled with Microsoft Office 2000 Personal, the upgraded version of Microsoft's widely used set of applications, a Hitachi spokesman said.

Microsoft's Office 2000 upgrade, which began selling in Japan on Tuesday, is designed to link traditional spreadsheet programs and word processing to the Internet.

Hitachi's new versions also feature software that enables users to edit digital images, design homepages, and print stickers. The spokesman declined to give a sales target for the new versions, but said the company expects to sell a total of 650,000 personal computers in the 1999/2000 business year, with 14 percent targeted at consumers.

It sold 605,000 personal computers in 1998/1999.

Industry data in May showed Japan's domestic shipments of personal computers hit 7.5 million units in the year that ended on March 31, up 10 percent from the year before.
