>> KT ICOM to Demonstrate W-CDMA 3G Service during Busan Asian Games
Korea Herald 2002.09.26 KT ICOM, a mobile unit of KT Corp., said it will demonstrate its W-CDMA third-generation (3G) mobile service during the Asian Games, extending its marketing campaign from the World Cup finals in June.
The company showcased its 3G technologies, typified by the smooth videophone streaming images, at the opening ceremony of the World Cup finals co-hosted by Korea and Japan.
KT ICOM is currently offering demonstration-only W-CDMA service, with full-fledged commercial service scheduled to be introduced next year. CDMA-based 3G service, otherwise known as cdma2000 1x, is widely available in Korea but the government granted 2GHz spectrum licenses to KT Corp. and SK Telecom in 2000 for future W-CDMA services, disregarding the disputes about overlapping network investment.

"The company will stress the difference between W-CDMA and cdma2000 1x during the Asian Games so that subscribers can understand the real merits of W-CDMA 3G service," KT ICOM said.
The mobile unit said it would operate demonstration rooms at BEXCO exhibition hall in Busan and two other locations. Major items include videophones, VOD (video on demand) streaming and MMS (multimedia messaging service).

The handset chip, provided by Qualcomm, has been upgraded from 3.0 to 4.0, ensuring better image quality for videophones, KT ICOM officials said.
Visitors at the demonstration rooms will be encouraged to experiment with MMS by sending photos, video messages, music and texts to other users.
"The Asian Games will be another turning point for the company's position in the global W-CDMA 3G market as the demonstration will showcase our system, handsets, parts, application and content to the global audience," KT ICOM CEO Cho Young-chu said. <<
