NEW YORK, June 29 (Reuters) - The number of rigs searching for oil and gas in the United States fell by two to 1,275 during the week ending June 29, according to oil services firm Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI - news).

A year ago there were 920.

The number of rigs exploring for oil and gas in Canada gained 17 to 322, compared to 327 last year.

The number of rigs in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico remained unchanged at 154, compared to 145 a year ago.

The number of rigs searching on land remained at 1,095, while the number of offshore rigs remained unchanged at 159. The number of inland rigs fell by two to 21.

The total North American rig count gained by 15 to 1,597 compared to last year's 1,247.

The number of rigs searching for oil rose by six to 217, while the number of rigs searching for gas fell by seven to 1,056. There were two miscellaneous rigs, down one from last week.

Directional rigs numbered 307, up one, while horizontal rigs numbered 79, down five, while rigs exploring vertically gained two to 889.

The states with the largest variances in rig count were Texas, which lost five to 513, and Louisiana, which gained five to 231.
