Wildfire Funding Explained

Raven, different Microsoft business groups are behind
these fundings. Specifically, the Advanced Technology group
invested in gmgc, while a business group invested in
Wildfire.

Don't think of Microsoft as monolithic. It has many
different fiefdoms with disparate interests. This explains
the apparent schizophrenia of these investments.

Of course, at the top level there is some rationalization
of investments. In this case, Microsoft is investing in
GMGC because of its agent technology - a key enabler for
internet commerce. On the other side of the fence, Microsoft
is investing in Wildfire for their enterprise/desktop
technology. Two different agendas.

So, to answer your question. I don't believe Microsoft
wants Portico. They want agents. Therefore, I conclude
that Microsoft/Wildfire and GMGC will be somewhat competitive
on the enterprise side.

As to Microsoft's previous investment in Wildfire. Yes, I
recall there was one. I'll see if I can find the citation.
