Cancer has always been around, but it is a modern plague. Although natural carcinogens exist, the threat of cancer has exploded as technology produces complex chemicals and molecules not found in nature. Exposure to carcinogens is unavoidable, but they can and should be minimized. We will get better at understanding the triggers that turn cells malignant so as to better avoid them, but potential new threats will continue as industrial processes develop as well as direct absorption by drugs and the food supply. The real hope and cure will come when we learn how to regulate the switches that turn cells malignant. This will come and will be just as revolutionary as the development of antibiotics to treat more traditional diseases.
