I was signed up for one of Final Bell's previous contests. I actually used it to test out my broker's recommended list and just entered all the stocks on their list in equal dollar quantities. I was in the bottom 15% of all contestants when the contest closed. I intend to pick my entry for the short contest from my Broker's list of recommended stocks.

If you have plenty of time to spare go ahead and enter the contest, however in order to win you have to keep clicking on boxes which say "Click here to get an extra 10,000 dollars", which presumably entail reading some tedious advertisment. Also the user interface is kind of slow and trades don't always get filled when you would expect them to.
You can short stock in theory at least but when I tried to short a big block of IBM it said I didn't have enough cash and the margin requirements weren't explained.

As for what they do with the information a cynical speculation would be that they target the people who do worst in the contest and bombard them with solicitations for mutual funds.
