Nebraska has the worlds first closed loop ethanol plant

(7/1/2007) Nebraska is gaining in its status as an ethanol producing state. A new plant is the first of its kind in the world, and it is located in the small town of Mead.

The Genesis plant is the worlds first closed loop ethanol plant.

The closed loop plant uses the manure of close to 30,000 head of cattle to produce bio gas. That gas is used to fire the plants ethanol boilers instead of coal or natural gas, the corn waste from that process is then fed to the cattle thus closing the loop.

“This is truly a historic event we are the example of a second generation of ethanol,” said Dennis M. Langley, CEO E3 Bio-fuels.

Construction of the $80 million dollar Genesis plant was completed this spring.

It will produce 25 million gallons of ethanol a year and consume 300,000 tons of manure.

A similar plant is in the works in Franklin County.
