Hi Quad

It looks like IBM may have an edge here, but then again this type of initiave has been launched before with no collosal impact on the electronic payments area (that I can see). Of course the big names like Visa and Mastercard have the mind share that this kind of project requires, but they also carry a lot of baggage in terms of inertia and legacy systems, both electronic and in terms of thinking.

If Novell can find a way to partner with companies like these, while still moving at 'Internet speed' they they could have the killer app of the new century under their belts. The real key behind any announcement is execution. Novell could put themselves in the position very quickly to execute on a payment system that not only allows for large, traditional style purchases (just like a credit card payment) on something like eBay, but also a micropayment system that would allow you for example to browse, snag some software/music/art from a web site and pay anything from 10 cents to $1 for it. This would give the internet and the small business community a *massive* boost.

Again, it's execution that matters, and Novell are very well positioned to execute. The rise of the stock price and the public perception will do their case no end of good. Even if Visa, IBM and the others can decide on a standard, Novell are pretty good at following standards, particularly with the good Dr. at the helm.

Regards

Peter
