Baghdad: Violence in Iraq has fallen to its lowest level in more than four years, according to a military report.

Iraqi security officials said an offensive against Al Qaida in Mosul had wiped out most of the insurgent network.

I just heard Arriana Huffington say the Surge couldn't be working because American casualties in April were the highest since September. She said this seriously. I've heard others on the left say it too.

One scarcely knows how to reply to grown people who need it pointed out to them that casualties can rise because you are losing, or conversely, because you are winning and trying to finish the war against a desparate enemy, and that the two situations are not equivalent. You have to look beyond this month's numbers to try to discern what the situation actually is.

But much of the Left's attitude about Iraq, especially as it has improved in the last year and a half, seems to be, "I have my narrative, and I'm damned if I let you spoil it with facts."
