Christine, I don't doubt much of what you say is true. However, inner city Catholic schools have performed amazingly well for decades. Many of these students don't necessarily come from a select group. If the trade-off is 100% literacy or playing in a fancy school yard. I would take literacy any day. One of the problems with public schools is their focus on sports at the expense of music, art and science. Who really cares whether a High school or junior High has a football team? As far as I'm concerned they can play touch football instead.

That's too bad about your husband and his education experience. However, there are millions upon millions of stories which completely contradict his. Parents would not be paying for these education institutions unless they saw value in them. Besides, no one is saying force children into Catholic schools. Unlike what apparently you are saying with regard to public schools. Why do you feel it is right to deny a parent free choice? Don't you believe that poor parents should have the same opportunities as wealthy parents to these outstanding schools?

No Christine, in the final analysis, public education run by the NEA and education department, has been a dismal failure. And nothing is going to fix it unless we first understand the need for change and then have the courage to radically alter a flawed concept.

Milwaukee's experiment with vouchers is proving amazingly successful. Inner city children with parents who care are the real beneficiaries. It's pathetic that people who say they believe in education have fought it all the way.

Michael
