Triff, he's talking about an Iran consolidating its regional power by controlling the Gulf. If they could close and open the traffic with impunity, their status as a regional superpower would be assured and the risk premiusm would double or triple the price of oil. Especially as Iran saved its own economy from collapse by collecting tribute on the oil of its neighbors.

Iran is in crisis. Half the country is under 25 and most are unemployed. The economy functions very badly. The country is controlled by old religious fanatics. Not surprisingly, discontent is widespread. The mullahs need an infusion of cash and an occupation for all those young men. A war has to look awfully tempting to them. But those pesky US Armed Forces are currently in the way. So they are harrying them through proxies.

But on the day a President Obama kissed Ahmedinijad on the cheek (like Carter kissed Breshnev) and says, "we are so out of there," there won't be a single thing to stop them. Do you think Saudi Arabia or Kuwait could defend their own oil fields by themselves for a day? They will have to cut whatever deal the Iranians demand.
