War involving North Korea a possibility: Australian think tank

An Australian Government think tank says the North Korea crisis could cause a war through misadventure or misjudgement.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute says the biggest risk is that North Korea will start full-scale reprocessing of plutonium, forcing a military strike by the United States.

The director of the Institute, Hugh White, says the most likely scenarios are a new deal with North Korea or a stalemate, but a war is possible.

"A war is a possibility and if it happened it would be extremely serious," he said.

"We have quite a big consular problem - there are 3000 plus Australians living in South Korea, and when the time came you can imagine Austarlian Governments would be very focussed on the safety of those Australians and perhaps also a lot of Australians in Japan would be keen to come home. I'm sure that's something the Government is doing some work on."
