'bringing the rest of the world together against a common enemy- the US'
Not against the US, but against the policy of current US admin, particularly that which is aimed against the UN in favour of promoting rule by Washington fiat ..... people are well able to distinguish this facet from the whole, i think, and some of the principles supposedly underlaying the US system remain attractive to the rest of us ... in fact, it is when they are violated, we are less offended by the specific action than by its inherent hypocrisy
Agreed on principle of leaning to staying out of civil wars ... sometimes it is not easy to determine where the line between 'civil' and 'inter-country' comes, though ... it sort of presupposes that we know where is the just boundary between the two countries, and doesn't address tribalism inside or spanning across those boundaries .... example - the Balkans ... i support the attempt to reduce there a war that could be described as 'civil', depending on definition ... another - Ruanda ... we didn't hear about this until hundreds of thousands had been murdered, but we should have, and would have if better systems were in place ... the UN officer in charge, Romeo Dallaire, certainly did what he could to make the world aware ... looking back, i would definitely support the use of canadian troops in that circumstance, early on and in force |
