Hi, Michael,
I don't have a strong position on uniforms one way or the other; however, there has been a push in the DISD school system in the past few years toward trying them and several schools elected to implement their use in 1995. The results have not been as hoped; incidence of violence and discipline problems did not decrease. I recently heard a story on the news that the results were complete opposite those for which they'd expected. So when you mentioned the Long Beach results I went to the story and in all fairness, it should be mentioned that there were other factors that may have been instrumental in affecting the statistical results you listed.

No one is saying uniforms are the only reason violence is down.
Others factors cited include an increased emphasis on parent involvement, decentralization of schools and a general effort to improve the learning environment.

Those three areas right there could more than account for the changes in the student performance.

My boys wore uniforms for years in private school. It was easier for parents, and I liked them, but I don't think they have the power people are trying to attribute to them. Children find other ways of differentiating the cool from the nerds-- socks, hair, speech. Kids are cruel whether they're wearing uniforms or not. A violent child is violent regardless. The larger problems are still there. There may be some benefits from the practice but it sounds right now as if the studies are not conclusive either way.
