so bordeaux is definitely out of the question...

although germany is world-renowned for its white wines, its reds are truly a hidden gem...i especially enjoy cuvées, basically a mixture of grapes...i highly recommend "cuvée else" and "regent spaetlese" from a winery i often frequent:

www.wein-im-kloster.de (for some reason the website is down now)

dornfelder halbtrocken is also a long-time favorite of mine...very mild and easy-going...you should be able to find it at any wine store

you might want to check out the following for some german wine info:

english.germanwine.de
