On a down day, I used to teach in wine country (Almaden area)and still prefer the cabernets. But I also like merlot and pinot noir and some of the blends.

And the bordeaux's of france are still my favorite. Some of the Spanish and Aussie wines are very good. It does not get hot enough (with cool nights)in the north west or New Zealand for good red wines.

The Europeans blend their wines more than we.

Napa is almost always a safe wine and for a good average cost dinner wine one can usually depend on a Mondavi.
