One of the many problems with a discussion of addiction is that it is typically a symptom, not the actual problem. While it's true that the addiction must go away before the underlying problem can be resolved, people who have never been through it, or people who are just beginning to deal with it, think that if only the substance went away everything would be fine. So much of the mainstream thinking on this subject is exactly backwards.

If everything was fine, that is the person was mentally healthy and had the tools to handle whatever emotional turmoil life might send, the substance wouldn't be a problem. And of course even that is not so simple, since the one feeds off the other in a downward spiral.

In the end my main objection is to characterizing people as 'riff raff'. Lucky you if apple pie or new shoes is your drug of choice. There's a lot of that going on in our society. Never did it for me. Lucky you if you can stick your nose in the air and sniff about riff raff. The phrase 'there but for the grace of god' goes through my mind and I'm not particularly religious.

There's another saying I'm fond of. 'Everything is exactly the way it's supposed to be, All Of The Time'. And wasted in some sense, but probably not in others. Apparently (note code word-where did that guy go anyway) that's what you needed to do.
