Comedian Stephen Colbert named Harold Ford Jr. his "Alpha Dog of the Week."

WASHINGTON -- Saying Harold Ford Jr. is "lifting (his) leg on New Yorkers," comedian Stephen Colbert on Monday night named the former Memphis Congressman his "Alpha Dog of the Week."

The three-minute segment on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" used Colbert's sarcastic approach to extol Ford for changing his positions on major social issues in an effort to accommodate New York's more liberal electorate. Ford is considering a run for the U.S. Senate from New York.

Quoting Ford on both sides of the legal right to abortion, Colbert concludes: "Yes, he believes every American has the right to choose when it is politically expedient to be pro-life."

On gay marriage, Colbert suggests that Ford opposed it when asked by CNN's Wolf Blitzer but changed his mind when asked by NBC's Matt Lauer, who is shown shirtless in a picture on screen.

"So, Bravo, Harold Ford," Colbert says, "for knowing who you are and who you might be in 15 minutes."
