Company Press Release

Adaptec First to Offer 400 Mb/s Native 1394 Storage
Solution

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 12, 1997--Adaptec Inc. has announced a 400 Mb/s 1394 chip set, the world's fastest specially designed for fixed and removable magnetic storage
drives.

The native chipset is comprised of Adaptec's new 400 Mb/s Link and a 400 Mb/s PHY and the
AIC-5460 IC. The AIC-5460 integrates the company's Ultra DMA/33 disk drive controller, DSP,
servo and analog technologies into a single chip. Adaptec's total storage solution also includes the
company's SBP-2 software drivers, 1394 storage specific firmware, and its AIC-8940 host
adapter.

''Adaptec today, with its 1394 host and peripheral silicon, host adapters and software support, is
the only company to offer compatibility and reliability throughout the 1394 development cycle,'' said
Bob Stephens, Adaptec's, vice president and chief operating officer. ''The Adaptec advantages are
also passed on to end-users as they enjoy the ease-of-use associated with Adaptec on both ends of
the bus.''

Customers will benefit from Adaptec's modular electronics and firmware architecture that are
designed into the AIC-5460 and the 400 Mb/s Link IC. This will enable customers to leverage
existing storage solutions to quickly offer native 1394 solutions.

''Samsung disk drives integrate Adaptec technologies today,'' said Dr. Moon Song, General
Manager for Samsung's Storage System division. ''Using Adaptec's modular architecture we will
leverage our current designs and firmware as we migrate to 1394, allowing us to maintain our costs
and decrease development time.''

As the market matures, customers will evolve their 1394 designs to a fully integrated 1394 solution
to reduce cost.

COMDEX Demonstration

Adaptec and Samsung will be the first companies ever to demonstrate 1394 disk drives. The drives
can be seen, by appointment, during the COMDEX trade show, November 17 - 22 in both
