A South Carolinian's take on Edwards
LAWYER AGAINST THE LAWYER NRO One e-mailer's read on Edwards's shot K-Lo,
Speaking as a Southerner, a son of a man who really did worked IN a cotton mill, someone who WORKED his way through college, AND a lawyer (all I need to be is good looking and I too could run for President) I don't think Edwards surge has legs. He is the new flavor of the month, much like Dean was a month ago. When scrutiny is paid to him and his message it will be revealed that his is simply a rehash of Gore's class warfare rhetoric of 2000. Just look at his home state where he was set-up to lose his re-election to the Senate in 04.
And come on if there is ANY group people universally hate it's trial lawyers. I say that as a lawyer ;which is why in bars when women ask I make it plain that I am an Assistant United States Attorney and don't just say "I'm a lawyer"...least they run screaming.
In SC Michael Graham had it right that, unlike Republicans, there is no "machine" structure where a king maker can deliver the votes for a Dem candidate. Even Congress Clyburn, the black congressman, does not have an effective organization to mobilize support for a candidate. While the Dem party has a good GOTV it is often controlled by whichever Democrat is at the top of the ticket and is not loyal to one particular person.
Labor unions aren't a big deal here, neither is there an anti-war crowd to speak of (at least away from the college campuses). The people voting in the SC primary will be African Americans in the Midlands/Pee Dee, yellow dogs in the Pee Dee area, blue bloods in the Lowcountry, retired yankees along the coast and veterans scattered throughout the state. I think Clark looks like the man to beat here with Kerry doing suprisingly well. |
