But the war is still in its early days. PC Meter reported BarnesandNoble.com's monthly at-home audience rating was 1.6 during November, 1997, a four-fold increase from its first month of operation and on a par with the most frequently visited commerce sites. The PC Meter index for BarnesandNoble.com's at-work audience was 2.3 for the same time period.
Recently, BarnesandNoble.com launched an Affiliate Network program, through which Web sites are paid a commission for orders referred to BarnesandNoble.com for fulfillment. The addition of CBS.com, Country.com, MarketWatch, and Pointcast brings its total number of affiliates to more than 1,300 sites, according to Barnes & Noble sources.
Stated Steve Riggio, vice chairman of Barnes & Noble Inc., "We are especially excited by the fact that January sales have been trending at December levels, which means that our 'ramp' is accelerating rapidly."
Riggio added: "Our launch goal for the e-commerce business was to focus primarily on the testing of fulfillment and customer service systems, especially through the first holiday season. To that end, we came out with flying colors."
