E,

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. . . As a community, judge and attempt to edify or protect yourself against those who fail to live in this way."

The Golden Rule is a beautiful credo, but it doesn't have any "teeth" until we arrive at a generally agreed upon set of moral values which define what is appropriate to "do unto others", and by extension, what we would have others do unto us. Otherwise, The Golden Rule becomes too vague to be effective. For example, I might think it perfectly acceptable to commit adultery, while the husband of the woman with whom I cheated might not want to be "done unto" in that manner. Without an explicit moral code we can refer to, I believe ethical chaos would soon ensue. Religions recognize the necessity of these codes of moral conduct, and establish them for the larger good of their cultures.

Can you be any more specific about what constitutes moral behavior (from an atheist's perspective) beyond the generality of the Golden Rule?

Rick
