MTSN/NVLS? Your comments about ego are right on. I don't know the personalities directly (Mattson/Hill etc) but sometimes "grand designs" like: "Let's put these incredible pieces together, each take on one part of the whole and out-amat AMAT....." Even an action like AMAT's proposed acquisition of ETEC can change the previous "limits". A common enemy can mobilze previously hostile neighbors to cooperation with and tolerance of each other. And a really blown-up share price (NVLS) can provide the framework for deals that otherwise might never happen. And Brad might think: "Is this market going to blow up because of its Internet-related excesses and leave me waiting for the same point in yet-another cycle?" I don't know the NVLS product line, but my impression is that there is not a huge product overlap. Is there? If you detect a little more wishful thinking than due diligence in this you are probably right. Anyway, I like holding stocks that look like great sales and earnings stories are upcoming and where acquisition possibilities are not completely far-fetched. Best wishes to all, Jim
