North Korea calls for the cancellation of 'war games' North Korea has called for the cancellation of joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, scheduled for next month. The Rodong Sinmun newspaper - the official mouthpiece of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party - has described the 12-day exercise as a 'preliminary war' against the North. Pyongyang is currently in a standoff with the US over its nuclear weapons program, and has accused Washington of planning a pre-emptive strike against it.
