This post from AOL is right on.

21 mil sounds cheap. Just think what IOM would
have spent in advertising attempting to convince
consumers not to buy these Nomai disks.

And the cost of customer service and tech reps
telling people the problem is not with the drive,
but with the disk.

And lost margins on sales of IOM disks due to
price reductions if Nomai wins

And attorney's fees.

And the intangible costs to IOM in terms of
brand loyalty, etc, etc., etc.,

A very prudent move on IOM's part.
This to me is a very healthy sign.
