Smith Micro's Internet Solutions Division Brings Wireless eCommerce to Several Additional Customers (PR Newswire, 03/20/2000 08:19)
Existing Web Sites Will Add Wireless WebDNA to Permit Purchases over Internet Phones
ALISO VIEJO, Calif., March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:SMSI), a leading developer and marketer of a wide range of software and service solutions for the Internet market, today announced an agreement to create wireless eCommerce systems for a number of e-tailers using Smith Micro's new Wireless WebDNA technology. Wireless WebDNA will enable customers of each of the companies' web sites to purchase merchandise over wireless Internet phones. The systems are expected to launch within the next 60 days.
The companies include FLOWER.com, an online flower shop ( flower.com ); Vann's, an electronics e-tailer ( vanns.com ); The Sound of Knowledge, a purveyor of seminar content media ( tsok.net ); and Me2u Gifts, a romantic gifts e-tailer ( me2u.com ). Smith Micro previously announced a similar agreement with Pillsbury Doughboy Shop ( doughboyshop.com ).
"We believe our ability to secure so many Wireless WebDNA customers within the first two weeks of the announcement of our technology is a testament to the strong demand for these wireless services," said Chris Lippincott, General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software. "We expect these customers will help usher in the wireless shopping era, and our technology will help them pave the way."
When these new systems launch, visitors using a wireless Internet browser will be able to see abbreviated, yet full-featured, storefront pages dynamically created using Wireless WebDNA. Shopping will be a quick process that utilizes familiar shopping cart functionality and a secure SSL connection for shipping and credit card information.
Wireless shoppers will be able to access these sites through the same URL as PC customers, thanks to Wireless WebDNA's unique ability to "sense" the type of browser "knocking at the door" and serve up pages accordingly. This will allow the respective companies to leverage the promotion they have already done for their sites.
"FLOWER.com has always been on the leading edge in terms of servicing our customers and with the help of Smith Micro, we are pleased to be among the first to offer our customers the convenience of ordering flowers online from their Internet phones," said Karen Appel, Director of Business Development for New York-based FLOWER.com.
"With research indicating that wireless devices are going to be a popular means of accessing the Internet, we believe that wireless is going to be an important new channel for our Vanns.com site," said Tim Christensen, technical director for Vann's, a seven-store electronics chain. "Smith Micro's ability to WAP-enable us before our competition even realizes the opportunity is going to put us in a strong position on the ground floor. It also opens the door for us to add a wireless category to our online offerings to give our wireless customers an extra reason to visit our site."
"Our eCommerce web site, powered by WebCatalog is a key component to our company's current rapid growth and profitability," said Michael Doane, President and CEO of The Sound of Knowledge, Inc. "The addition of wireless WAP technology from SmithMicro will enable us to build on that foundation, add a new channel for current customers and clients, and potentially reach more people who prefer to do their shopping wirelessly."
