Japan's NEC three-year business plan - summary
TOKYO, July 5 (Reuters) - Following are key points of NEC Corp <6701.T>, Japan's biggest personal computer and semiconductor maker, for the three years to March 2003:
-- NEC plans to spend 600 billion yen on group basis over the next three years to boost its global competitiveness.
-- The company will soon form a special team to consider pursuing mergers and acquisitions via equity swaps.
-- NEC will consider "globalising" its shares, selling affiliated companies' shares, pursuing initial public offerings (IPOs) of affiliates, increasing use of leased equipment, and securitising sales receivables.
-- Those moves are aimed at raising the huge funds needed for achieving an average 10 percent annual sales growth over the three years to March 2003.
-- The company aims to reduce its group interest-bearing debt to 1.67 trillion yen by March 2003, from 1.96 trillion yen as of March 2000.
-- NEC aims at group net profit of 200 billion yen in 2002/03 against an actual 10.4 billion yen in 1999/2000, sales of 6.7 trillion yen in 2002/03, up from 4.99 trillion yen in 1999/2000.
-- The company aims at a group return on equity (ROE) of 15 percent in 2002/03, against 1.1 percent in 1999/2000.
-- NEC aims at sales of 600 billion yen in 2000/03 from the next generation mobile-related business.
-- The company will strengthen the global competitiveness of its mobile network systems and mobile terminals by through an alliance with Siemens <SIEGn.DE> on W-CDMA next generation cell phones.
-- In February, NEC, Siemens and Telecom Italia Group (TIM) <TIT.MI> agreed to start technical trials in March of the next generation mobile communication system UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems).
-- NEC aims to expand sales at its software service business to one trillion yen in 2002/03 from 670 billion yen in 1999/2000.
-- Sales of devices for use in mobile terminals such as system LSI (large-scale integrated) chips, colour liquid crystal display panels and lithium-ion batteries are estimated at 330 billion yen in 2002/03, with investment focusing on W-CDMA-use components.
-- It aims to achieve 30 percent share in global market of electronic components for use in W-CDMA sometime in the future.
-- NEC is willing to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange by the year to March 2003, NEC president Koji Nishigaki told reporters.
