Herr Su,

re: Jorma Ollila keynote at USB PJ Today

<< Bottomline, quoting a famous person: Jorma is in denial >>

I did not read it that way but then again I hold Nokia (Boo! Hiss! <g>) in addition to Qualcomm in my portfolio, and I follow Nokia every bit as much as I do Qualcomm.

Actually, in a sense I guess you could say I follow it closer than Qualcomm since there are so many astute Qualcomm watchers posting to this thread and its predecessor, and its predecessor, and its predecessor dating back to the original fun CDMA, Qualcomm thread which became the CDMA, Qualcomm [Hong Kong, Korea, LA] THE MARKET TEST! thread after Maurice lost a few of the original posts, and as a consequence keeping tabs on the sunny San Diego (and NZ) side of the wireless street is easy and I can concentrate on the dark Arctic Circle side while others do the SD DD for me <ggg>.

For those that did not listen, I thought I might comment about the section I found most interesting which was the section on cdma (cdmaOne/cdma2000) which was 15 to 20 minutes into the webcast.

After admitting what we all know (once again) that Nokia has done a poor job with cdma and acknowledging its significance as a Nokia challenge relative to Nokia's growth potential Jorma claimed 10% cdma market share for Nokia - which I personally think might be a couple points high.

Here are the two things I found interesting.

1.) Jorma stated that in 2003 that every product launch of new GSM product would be accompanied by the product launch of a 1xRTT product with equivalent form factor and features and he stated what we all know and that is that this has not been the case in the past.

2.) No mention was made of Korea as a growth area for Nokia. This differs from recent Nokia presentations that indicate that Korea is potentially a 1xRTT growth area for Nokia. As you know the Telson relationship has to date only produced 2 models of Telson built Nokia branded IS-95B bivalve "folders" using the Qualcomm MSM3000 which were/are marketed in Korea. It is possible that Nokia is still targeting this market for expansion (using Qualcomm chipsets) but no mention was made today.

All FWIW.

Best,

- Eric -
