Android at MWC tackles business, tablet sectors

Buzz up!.With the Mobile World Congress kicking off in Barcelona today, there’s plenty of exciting news spanning the globe this week. Android’s at the center of it all, with new devices, more supporting apps and further dedication to Google’s (GOOG) mobile platform. While competition is still on the rise, with Nokia (NOK) CEO Stephen Elop discussing his hopes for the company’s new partnership with Microsoft (MSFT), and RIM (RIMM) also gaining big-name supporters like EA Games (ERTS), Android’s managing to hold its own at MWC so far.
Motorola takes over MWC day one
Motorola (MMI) is among the most prevalent manufacturers at MWC, unveiling the PRO Android phone for business users. It’s a tiny smartphone, weighing less than 5 ounces, but still packs a full QWERTY keyboard and a 3.1-inch pixel touch screen display. Running Android 2.2, the PRO has built-in support for Adobe (ADBE) Flash Player 10.1, has a 5-megapixel camera with a dual LED flash, and mobile hot-spot capabilities.
Motorola may be busy making phones, but there’s always time for an acquisition. Motorola Mobility has snapped up security provider 3LM, a California-based company that makes Android’s OS safe for business environments. The deal will help Motorola sell more Android PROs to business customers, giving Google an edge in this RIM-dominated space.
Samsung’s second Android tablet
The business market is ripe for tablets, too, and Samsung (005930.KS) is still determined to tackle the iPad market. Announcing their second generation Android tablet, the Tab 10.1 is sexier and more powerful than its older sibling. The new tablet features a 10.1-inch display, powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor, and holds two cameras for video capture and chatting. Running Android 3.0, the Samsung Tab is already ahead of the game.
