Volatility will continue to rock Wall Street this year, but prognosticator Jonathan Steinberg said several stocks will stand out.

Steinberg, chairman of Individual Investor Group Inc. in New York City, which produces Individual Investor and Ticker magazines, is banking on seven years of being able to sort out the gems among publicly traded companies.

His seven-year portfolio pick average has yielded a 23-percent annual return.

Steinberg recently shared his 1999 selections during a visit to Detroit.

Among the 25 stocks featured in Individual Investor's January issue, were three favorites:

Novell Inc., a Provo, Utah-based network software provider that has beat analysts' forecasts for the last four quarters. Individual Investor is projecting 1999 earnings-per-share growth of more than 70 percent.
