Wes: I certainly agree with the acquisition theory. In fact, I expect a lot of consolidation with the Linux sector ... in order to make a more powerful product and support line.
Don't get me wrong, RHAT is over valued but to say that it won't trade higher could be a huge error in judgement. Short term I hope it splits and dumps .... I want some.
Wes, I think you and I are the technical people here on the thread. Technology is all I have ever known, and all I have ever done professionally. I am a technical development executive, and have studied the ebb and flow of technology, and the businesses that drive the technologies, for 15 years. I am sure you have done the same.
I have studied the intricacies of how businesses move against one another and how they jocky for position. I also try to stay keenly aware of the technological uses of the product itself, to understand how it fits into mainstream use, or future mainstream use. I remember people calling me nuts many years ago when I was saying that the Windows desktop and server would merge in the future into a largely single implementation and that directory services would have to be adopted in MSFT was ever to expect any real server attention. Sure many people use NT, but without directory services, for large implementations, it is hamstrung.
Only time will tell what will happen with Linux. But as the other technologist on the thread, I guess we stand very opposed.
Very healthy.
