Yes, he might be the next Jimmy Carter, but anyone 40 and under doesn't remember any of that nor cares to.
1. A very large percentage of the electorate (the part that actually votes) is over 40. Over half, I believe. They remember.
2. Jimmy Carter didn't run as a leftist. He ran as a moderate Southern governer, a naval engineer. Obama is running as what exactly? the second coming? Much as the media want to cover for him, you think nobody will ask hard questions from now until November?
3. Jimmy Carter ran against an unelected President in the aftermath of Watergate. Even so it was close and tightening as election day approached. Many observers thought that if the election had been a couple of weeks later, Ford might have won.
4. McCain won the nomination as the most electable Republican candidate. Conversely, the Dems, feeling the wind at their back, went out on a limb with an inspirational rookie.
5. Anybody is more experienced than Obama. His only accomplishments are two books and this campaign. He has never done anything but talk. The judgement he is running on leaves a lot to be desired, which will be seen as the nature of his political allies seeps into public consciousness - Wright, Ayers, Fleger, and his chief fundraiser, Tony Rezko, who has just been convicted of fraud and money laundering. |
